What We Do
Prayer, learning, and friendship — all year round.
MSA’s life on campus runs across six areas. Some happen daily, some weekly, and some only once a year — together they are how our community gathers, grows, and looks out for one another at Michigan Tech.
Worship
Worship
Five Daily Prayers
The five daily prayers, prayed in congregation at the masjid. Everyone is welcome to join us — see the current schedule on our prayer times page.
Worship
Friday Sermon (Jumu’ah)
Jumu’ah, the Friday congregational prayer, with a sermon followed by the prayer. It is the centerpiece of our week and the first thing most new students look for.
Education
Education
Men’s Weekly Halaqah
A weekly halaqah, or study circle, for the brothers — a relaxed space to read, discuss, and learn together over the course of the semester.
Education
Ladies’ Weekly Halaqah
A weekly halaqah for the sisters, run by and for the women of our community — a warm, regular gathering for study and friendship.
Education
Sunday Children’s Madrasa
A Sunday school for the children of our community, where the youngest members of the Keweenaw’s Muslim families learn the basics in a friendly setting. It’s on pause for now, and we’re working to bring it back.
Ramadan
Ramadan
Ramadan Iftars
Community iftars — the meal that breaks the fast at sunset — held through the month of Ramadan so no one breaks their fast alone, far from home.
Ramadan
Taraweeh Prayers
Nightly taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, prayed together at the masjid after the evening prayer.
Ramadan
Grand Iftar
Our largest gathering of the year — a community-wide iftar that brings students, families, and friends of MSA together at one table.
Social

Eid Sermons
The two Eid prayers and sermons — Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha — celebrated together as a community, our happiest days of the year.
Social
Graduate Farewell
A send-off for our graduating students — a chance to celebrate everything they’ve given the community before they head out into the world.
Social
Picnic & Potlucks
Picnics and potlucks through the year — good food, fresh Keweenaw air, and the everyday friendship that holds the community together.
Outreach
Outreach
Parade of Nations
We join Houghton’s annual Parade of Nations, sharing the cultures of the Muslim countries represented at Michigan Tech with the wider community.
Outreach
Faith Fair
We take part in campus faith fairs alongside other student groups — a friendly place for the MTU community to ask questions and get to know us.
Outreach
Hijab Try-Out Day
An open, no-pressure event where anyone curious can try on a hijab, ask questions, and learn what it means to the women who wear it.
Outreach
Ramadan Awareness Day
A campus event that introduces non-Muslim students and staff to Ramadan — what fasting is, why it matters, and how to support classmates who fast.
Services

Chicago Grocery Run
A periodic group trip to Chicago for halal groceries and supplies you can’t find in the Keweenaw — one of the practical ways we look after each other up here.
New to MTU and want to get involved? You’re not alone. You belong here.
