Assalam u alaikum,
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

First of all we, MSA at Michigan Tech, share the same feeling and thoughts about this incident as were expressed by MSA National, whose message was already circulated in an e-mail by the vice president of MSA at Michigan Tech, couple of days ago.

MSA at Michigan Tech denounces and strongly condemns this act of violence. We offer our deepest condolences to the victims and families of the victims. This incident should be observed as an act of violence by an individual who lost his mind, and not by a person belonging to a particular community. This act of violence was perpetrated by an American against fellow Americans and all acts of violence should be condemned and denounced as strongly as possible irrespective of who ever commits it and for what ever reasons the person commits it.

MSA is concerned about those who are injured and prays for their early and complete recovery. We also pray for the departed souls.

We preach what we practice, “Peace …not Prejudice”.
wassalam

MSA NATIONAL VEHEMENTLY CONDEMNS TRAGIC SHOOTING AT FORT HOOD, TX

November 6, 2009 – Washington, DC- Yesterday, a tragic act of violence at Fort Hood, Texas, left nearly a dozen men and women dead, and dozens more wounded. MSA National vehemently condemns this senseless act, and extends its deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives or were wounded.

Whether this tragedy is the result of mental instability, or a wanton act of violence, remains unknown. Regardless, the need for open dialogue within all American communities is imminent. Just as many Muslim Student Associations across the United States have engaged in forward-thinking, positive, and productive “Peace…not Prejudice” campaigns this month, we encourage all universities to take the time to host two-part “Campus Conversations”, starting with frank and open discussions, in which participants will express their deepest and most sincere thoughts regarding this and other tragedies worldwide. These dialogues should then be followed by solution-based conversations that shall seek to establish reasonable steps toward respect and understanding, tragedy prevention, and a lasting peace within all American communities, that can emanate worldwide.

We also urge our university communities, as well as America’s Muslim communities in general, to dedicate next week’s traditional Friday prayer to the condemnation of this wanton violence within the teachings of Islam.

While nothing will bring back the lives of those who have been lost, we recognize that a peaceful national dialogue will serve as a blockade to any individual who wishes to do harm unto others, as well as a sincere teaching moment for all.

The Muslims Students Association (MSA) National is the largest Muslim Students group in the United States and Canada. Its mission is to serve the individual Muslim student as well as the chapter through sponsorship of educational programs, through offering students chances to learn, network and grow at zonal and annual conferences, as well as through management training programs. As a broad platform for students from all backgrounds, MSA National works with all organizations whose agenda includes a special focus on students and issues of concern to them during their college career.

———– Keep calling for healthcare reform to counter the insurence lobby———-

Congress must join the civilized world and expand Medicare for all Americans

A single, nonprofit source must run a universal health care system that covers everyone. Medical bills are now the #1 cause of bankruptcies and evictions in this country. Medicare for all will end this misery. The bill to make this happen is called H.R. 3200. You must call AND write your members of Congress and demand its passage, no compromises allowed.

Each of us must get into the daily habit of taking 5 minutes to make four brief calls:

* one to the President (202-456-1414),
* one to your Congressperson (202-224-3121)
* one to each of your two Senators (202-224-3121)

To find out who represents you, click here. Take just one minute on each of these calls to let them know how you expect them to vote on a particular issue. Let them know you will have no hesitation voting for a primary opponent – or even a candidate from another party – if they don’t do support Medicare for all Americans. Trust me, they will listen. If you have another five minutes, click here to send them each an email. And if you really want to drop an anvil on them, send them a snail mail letter!

Here is a script which you may want to modify for yourself:

“My name is ___________ and I live in ____________. I am calling to let you know that I support Medicare For All and I want you to end the five-year waiting period for legal immigrants in Medicaid, Medicare, and CHIP. I believe all people including immigrants should be treated fairly when it comes to health care reform.”

Dear brothers and sisters,

Assalam u alaikum.

One of the members of MSA was in the local news for being the first Arabian native to complete an eight week health care training at Portage Hospital. The following is the excerpt along with the link of the local news daily where it appeared. May Allah help the student in all her future endeavors, AAMEEN.

http://www.mininggazette.com/page/content.detail/id/506121.html

Saudi Arabia native completes eight-week hospital elective

HANCOCK – Copper Country residents have made homesickness a little less of an issue for Dr. Rudhab Bahabry this summer. Bahabry, of Saudi Arabia, is finishing eight weeks at Portage Health in Hancock as part of an elective through the King Abdul-Aziz University in Jeddah.

“I am most grateful to have had this experience,” she said in near-perfect English. “Some of my friends studied abroad in Canada and the U.S. and I wanted to try it. I have learned a great deal and am thankful to many people.”

Bahabry interviewed successfully with Dr. Kirk Lufkin, Portage Health’s Chief Medical Officer, last year, after Lufkin made the acquaintance of her husband, a Michigan Technological University student who was looking for a health care position for his wife so they could be together. Bahabry soon found she was pregnant, and had to postpone her start date. She gave birth at Portage in May, and started her instruction June 15.

The Saudi Arabian medical school process differs from that of the United States in that prospective doctors are not required to complete four years of a pre-medicine college curriculum and then four years of medical school. Instead, the system is based on six years of intensive medical training right out of high school for those students who qualify under a highly selective system.

Bahabry, who is completing her studies with a year’s internship, must complete two months each of internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery and pediatrics, as well as one month of emergency medicine, two weeks of radiology and eight weeks of electives. Her eight-week stay at Portage qualified her for academic credit for the elective requirement. However, as Portage Health is not licensed as a “teaching hospital,” Bahabry could observe but not directly interact with patients.

“I shadowed doctors and asked a lot of questions,” Bahabry said. “I thought they would get bored with all of my questions but everyone was very nice.”

Radiologist Dr. Paul Lyle noted Bahabry was “consistently attentive and pleasant,” even at the end of a long working day, while Family Practice Physician Dr. David Kass said Bahabry had been very well-received by his patients.

But Bahabry’s tutelage in the laboratory with Pathologist Dr. Petio Kotov was particularly rewarding, for both teacher and student.

“She is gifted with a talent to recognize and remember tissue patterns, and spent a lot of time performing examinations of surgical biopsies to establish the correct diagnosis,” Kotov said. “This ‘test’ she has passed with excellent remarks.”

Bahabry’s success as a budding pathologist was a surprise even to her.

“I thought before that I wanted to be perhaps a neurologist or a dermatologist, but I loved working in the lab because each slide is like a mystery,” she said. “Dr. Kotov would say ‘look, what is this,’ and was so encouraging. I now believe this is what I want to do.”

Bahabry said the warm welcome by co-workers and new friends has helped ease the homesickness she feels for Jeddah, and the separation from her mother and sisters.

“Everyone we have met here has been so nice, it’s a small place, and it’s very quiet,” she said. “I will miss the climate and being close to nature, but of course I will miss my husband the most.”
